How to Get Your Tampa Business Recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude

By Justin Saint ·

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude "where should I get tacos in Ybor?" or "who can repair my roof in Riverview?", the assistant usually names a handful of businesses. There's no paid placement to buy and no secret trick. Assistants recommend businesses they can find, understand and verify. This guide covers what you can control.

How AI assistants find local businesses

Depending on the product and settings, an assistant may answer from what it learned in training, from a live web search, from map and listing data, or from a mix. In practice that means three sources matter most:

  • Your own website. What you do, where, when you're open and how to book.
  • Your listings. Google Business Profile, Apple Maps (Apple Business Connect), Bing Places, Yelp and industry directories.
  • What others say. Reviews, local press, newsletters and community sites that mention you.

When these sources agree and are easy to read, an assistant can describe you with confidence. When they conflict (different hours, an old phone number, a menu that only exists as a photo), it may hedge or pick someone else.

Step 1: Say exactly what you do, in plain text

Write a clear sentence near the top of your homepage: what you are, who you serve and where. For example: "Family-owned HVAC repair and installation serving Brandon, Riverview and Valrico." Then give each main service or menu category its own section or page, in text rather than images.

Step 2: Make your details consistent everywhere

Check your business name, phone, hours, website and service area on your site, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and Facebook. Fix any mismatches, including holiday hours. This is often the fastest win.

Step 3: Add structured data

Structured data (schema.org markup in JSON-LD) is a small block of code that labels your name, type of business, hours, contact info, services and area served in a format machines read reliably. Use the most specific type you can, such as Restaurant, Plumber, Dentist or LegalService, and don't add anything that isn't true.

Step 4: Answer real customer questions

Add an FAQ with the questions you hear every week: parking, pricing ranges, how long a job takes, whether you take walk-ins, what areas you cover. People ask assistants these exact questions, and clear answers give the assistant something to quote.

Step 5: Make the next step obvious

Link directly to booking, ordering, reservations or a quote form. If an assistant can point someone to a working link, you're easier to recommend.

Step 6: Let AI crawlers read your site

Check your robots.txt isn't blocking reputable crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and Bingbot, unless you've deliberately chosen to. Some sites also publish an llms.txt file: a short plain-text summary of the business for AI tools.

Step 7: Earn genuine reviews and mentions

Ask happy customers for honest reviews and reply to them. Never buy or fake reviews. Local press, chamber listings and community newsletters also help assistants confirm you're real and active.

Test it yourself

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude the questions your customers would ask, using your neighborhood and service. Note whether you appear and whether the details are right. Repeat after making fixes. Answers vary from run to run, so look for patterns rather than one result.
